A collector participated in a rip and ship stream run by Whatnot seller rippingwithrani and pulled a card worth approximately $200. The seller saw the pull and was visibly excited — even displaying the card on stream for viewers to see.
The buyer had every reason to feel confident. The card was shown. The seller was hyped. The shipment was on its way.
What Arrived
When the package arrived the buyer opened it to find an empty card loader.
No card. Just the loader the card had been displayed in on stream — now empty.
Blocked
The buyer went to message rippingwithrani to sort out what happened.
They had been blocked.
The seller's Whatnot profile shows a 4.7 rating across 19 reviews with 168 items sold and an average ship time of under one day. On the surface those numbers look fine. But a 4.7 rating means nothing if valuable cards are being kept and buyers are being blocked the moment they try to follow up.
The buyer shared the experience publicly on Reddit with this warning to the community:
"Yea be careful on those rip n ships lol. Figured I would put this out there to make others aware."
How This Scam Works
The empty loader trick is one of the most deliberate forms of fraud in the rip and ship space. Here is why:
An empty loader does not end up in a package by accident. The card has to be physically removed from the loader before shipping. This is not a fulfilment mistake or a packing error — it requires an intentional act of taking the card out and sealing the empty loader into the package anyway.
The fact that the seller displayed the card on stream makes this worse. It confirms the card existed, was in the seller's possession, and was known to belong to the buyer.
The Rip and Ship Risk
Rip and ship streams on Whatnot work like this: buyers pay a set price for a slot. The seller opens packs on stream and whatever cards come out of your slot get shipped to you. The appeal is the live experience — you watch your cards get pulled in real time.
The risk is that once the stream ends the buyer has no way to verify what actually gets put in their package. They are entirely dependent on the seller's honesty.
